Avoid visiting the Banaue Rice Terraces in the rainy season (summer and fall) when low-lying clouds can disappointingly mask the views. Winter is the ideal sightseeing season.
October month is the harvest time. The musical beat of the drumming sound will invite you to the native woman milling the whole rice. You would see a couple of women face to face across the huge dugout wood bowl separating the kernel from whole grain by pounding (bayo) with a heavy pole as it was done thousand of years ago. Without losing beat the women shift arms and alternately pound to the unison designs of the skirt's colorful tapestry. The drumming sound changes to the various stages of milling.
Hiking possibilities abound in the cool mountain air. Beyond the must-visit Banaue Viewpoint, trekking down into Batad village, 16 kilometers east of Banaue, is a highlight even the most jaded traveler will appreciate. Huddled afoot a rising amphitheatre of yellow-green rice terraces; Batad is a settlement of no roads, no vehicles, and no electricity. Batad is in the heart of Banaue Ifugao culture, where thatched tribal huts, raised on stilts and with a storage area for rice in each loft, make up the village.
