Tagaytay City played a unique historical role during the Revolution of 1896. It became the place of refuge and quick hide-away for Filipino revolutionaries from Batangas, Laguna and other neighboring towns. Its central location, coupled with forests on its ridges and undulating terrain offered a ready sanctuary for the Katipuneros. The revolutionaries termed the movement to and from the towns via Tagaytay with the word, "mananagaytay" to mean "traversing ridges" of Tagaytay
At the closing years of the 2nd World War in 1945, Lieutenant General William Krueger¡¯s 8th Army Division parachuted military supplies and personnel on the Tagaytay ridge prior to Manila¡¯s Liberation from Japanese. To commemorate this historical event, a marker was installed in 1951 at the junction of the Silang-Canlubang-Nasugbu-Caloocan-Talisay roads.
Tagaytay became a chartered city with the signing of Commonwealth Act. No.338 by President Manuel L. Quezon on June 21, 1938.
Today, Tagaytay City is identified as one of the priority areas for tourism development of the Department of Tourism. Likewise, the city has been identified in the CALABARZON as the tourist center
