15 February 2004 The San Miguel Master Chorale invited to the 2005 World Symposium on Choral Music in Japan
The San Miguel Master Chorale was recently chosen as one of the invited choirs to the 7th World Symposium on Choral Music to be held in Kyoto, Japan from July 27 to August 3 next year.
The news of the selection was relayed to Ryan Cayabyab, executive and artistic director of The San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts which manages the SMMC, by Nobuyoshi Yoshimura, executive committee chairman of the symposium.
According to Yoshimura, the symposium performing choirs are chosen by
an international artistic committee of experts headed by Saeko
Hasegawa, artistic director. The SMMC was chosen from hundreds of aspirants
based on submitted repertoire and audio samples in accordance with the theme antus populi, cantus mundi. Cantus omnibus unus.?(The songs of the people, the songs of the world. One song unto all.)
The proposed program of the SMMC featured an all-Filipino repertoire
including the works of Cayabyab, Eudenice Palaruan, Francisco Feliciano
and Dyzon Pesquera, a member of the SMMC.
Aside from the main symposium concert with other invited choirs, the
SMMC will perform in community concerts in various venues around Kyoto.
The SMMC has also been invited to participate in the fringe concerts
outside of Kyoto and the Kansai area in Japan.
The World Symposium on Choral Music is a one-week event organized every
three years that attracts the world's most prestigious choral
conductors and choirs. Previously, the symposium has been hosted by Austria,
Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Singapore, the United States,
The symposium goes to Japan in 2005 to be jointly hosted by the
International Federation for Choral Music and the Japan Choral Association,
and co-organized by the Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City, the Asahi Shimbun
The SMMC will be performing selections from their proposed Japan
repertoire on March 13 at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. Entitled
밙ayumanggi,?the concert will be feature Filipino and Asian works for a
cappella and accompanied voices. Guest conductor Eudenice Palaruan will
conduct The San Miguel Master Chorale and The San Miguel Philharmonic
Orchestra.
