2 February 2004 Department of Tourism named top performing government agency by Makati Business Club
The Makati Business Club (MBC) named the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Health (DOH) as the best performing government agencies for the second semester of 2003, besting 35 other agencies in all government branches in a January survey conducted among the country’s top business executives.
The BSP garnered a net satisfaction rating of 74.4 points, while the DOT got 58.6 and DOH 48.7 points from 82 business executives that answered the survey. The same survey in July 2003 also saw the three government agencies topping the list of the Makati business group.
The MBC, on the other hand, gave the lowest performance ratings to the House of Representatives, Senate, Department of Public Works and Highways, Commission on Elections, and the Philippine National Police in the January 2004 survey. Only 16 of the 35 government agencies identified got positive ratings from the members of MBC.
Recently, the DOT’s “WOW Philippines” campaign bagged the Gawad Oscar M. Florendo Award for Best Government Information Program of 2003, besting 47 other entries. A brainchild of former Tourism Secretary Richard J. Gordon, the campaign was chosen among two other national government information programs on SARS prevention and sweepstakes papremyo.
The Gawad Oscar Florendo is a special award program that reflects the genuine concern of the Public Relations Organization of the Philippines (PROP) to recognize outstanding public information programs and projects initiated by government institutions.
The latest MBC survey was conducted from January 7 to 23 with a sample size of 11% from MBC’s more than 700 member-companies. 82% of respondents are in top management positions. 90% of those who were surveyed are Filipinos. More than half of respondent companies are in the services sector and close to a fifth of respondent firms are in manufacturing.
Nearly 60% of respondent companies posted revenues of P500 million and above last year. More than two thirds of respondent companies have less than 500 employees each while close to a third have more than 500 employees.
