14 November 2003 DOT sets 1st National Rodeo Competition
Rampaging rodeo action unfolds in Manila when the Department of Tourism-organized 1st National Rodeo Competition, one of the special events of Visit Philippines 2003 kicks off on December 2 to 4 at the Qurino Grandstand.
Tourism secretary Richard J. Gordon said the rodeo competition will enhance the DOTs efforts to promote sports tourism and rodeo itself through the participation of teams from eight regions led by teams from Bukidnon and Masbate, considered the countrys rodeo capital.
This exciting and fun-filled competition is one way to draw interest from tourists especially in destinations where the sport is flourishing and at the same time hone the skills of Filipinos, Gordon said.
Gordon said the event will offer spectators thrills and spills during the rodeo exhibitions, bull riding, show jumping and cattle wrestling, carambola, casting down, and lassoing events.
A grand parade of participants is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on opening day followed by the competition proper at 2:00 p.m.
Individual champions per event will be awarded P140,000, second placers P105,000 and third placers P70,000. Overall team champion will receive P100,000, runner up will get P75,000 and second runner up P50,000.
Rodeo Masbateno, Inc., Office of the Governor (Masbate) and Del Monte Philippines and Impasugong local government unit of Bukidnon are among the favorites in the various events.
Other participating teams expected to give the favorites a tough challenge are Philippine Carabao Center (Ubay, Bohol), Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro City, Central Luzon State University (Nueva Ecija), Benguet State University, La Salle-Araneta University (Malabon City), Dept. of Agriculture and Isabela State University (Tuguegarao City, Cagayan) and University of Southern Mindanao (North Cotabato).
