GIONNA CABRERA - Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2005

Gionna Cabrera is indeed delivered on the hype, as she got plum awards by winning both Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown, plus Miss Photogenic (Binibining Pilipinas 2005). Though many pundits would say that Carlene Aguilar has the better swimsuit figure, Gionna proves worthy of the Best in Swimsuit honor with her charisma and her toned figure (which may not always register on camera, but was in full display onstage).

Beauty Queen Material

During the gown presentation, she shimmered in a shiny and sexy pink number. Sure, she may have wobbled and momentarily tripped at one point, but she still exuded class and elegance despite that minor wobble that she still won favor with the judges. Then, in the interview portion, she answered the Turkish mbassador Artemis Somer's question about the biggest social issue affecting women today.

The Third Filipina Miss Universe?

Gionna responded how women's rights are still being trampled upon and that there is still a chauvinist mentality, and cited the Taliban. It was a strong answer, and made a major impact on both hosts Richard Gomez and Paolo Bediones (they mentioned it while waiting for the results off camera). Some pageant pundits may quibble that Gionna's answer was too negative, and even I agree that it's not perfect, that Gionna should acknowledge that there are many societies that have shown progress in terms of women's rights, but we have to also give =credit that Gionna is also correct-women have indeed come a long way, but there is still a long way to go: besides the Taliban, there's bride burning, honor killings, gang rapes, etc.

Philippines Pride

Gionna should make the most of her training to fine-tune what is already formidable raw material. If she goes to Colombia, my advice is she observe closely Miss Colombia Adriana Tarud-that lady is a front-runner for the crown and Gionna could learn from Adriana to help her ensure that she'll get a lock for the Miss Universe Top 15. she could do it and take our country out of a six-year semifinals drought.

The Bb. Pilipinas 2005 pageant is still the country's s most renowned and most-awaited pageant. It is is a continuing project of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI), an organization founded by beauty queen and civic leader Mrs. Stella Marquez de Araneta.
