Increase in tourist arrivals to continue with long holidays

Arrivals to key destinations significantly rose during the Holy Week and numbers are still expected to rise over the long holidays, according to the Tourism Department.

“Projections of a surge in group bookings will continue over the upcoming holidays, with the availability of affordable fares and packages. The long weekends certainly give time for tourists to extend travel plans and an opportunity to explore the country and help spur local economic growth,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

“This is healthy not only for the tourism industry, but more importantly, it provides an avenue for families and big groups to have more meaningful recreation time together,” he added.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) Research and Statistics Division reported positive growth in key tourism areas over the Lenten Season expected to continue throughout the year. (more…)

Philippine Chinese tourist arrivals record high growth rate in January 2009

Tourist arrivals from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan posted significant growth in January 2009 via a 100.3 percent, 65.8 percent and 31.1 percent increase, respectively, according to a preliminary report by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the “in-market tactical programs” initiated by the DOT and its partners since November of 2008 for the Chinese New Year ’09 celebration greatly boosted the arrivals.

“In addition, we are also beginning to see the shift in trends and preferences of the Chinese market with their diversified choices of destinations and tourist products,” Durano further said.

Last year, the DOT and Chinese air transportation sector worked together to open new chartered flights between Shanghai and Nanning to Cebu, Guangzhou to Clark in Pampanga and Nanning and Kunming to Manila. (more…)

Philippines October Tourist Arrivals Flat, But 10-Month At Record

Foreign tourist arrivals into the Philippines in October were hardly changed from last years number, with a decline in the number of visitors from key markets such as China, Japan and South Korea offsetting increases from other countries, data from the Department of Tourism showed Thursday.

The data showed visitor arrivals reached 241,809, flat from the 241,745 recorded in October 2007. The Department of Tourism, however, noted that foreign tourists still climbed to a record-high 2.61 million in the first 10 months of this year, up 4% from last year’s 2.51 million.

Arrivals from South Korea, which emerged in recent years as the Philippines’ biggest tourist market, declined 9.4% on year in October to 45,007. The number of tourists from China declined 15% on year, while that from Japan fell 9.1% on year. (more…)
