Philippine tourism chalks up growth despite global economic slowdown

In the face of layoffs and lean income from several industries triggered by the global financial slowdown, tourism remains a bright spot for the country, particularly in Bicol, that registered last year over 1.3 million tourist arrivals, a senator said here Tuesday.

According to Bicolano lawmaker Francis “Chiz” Escudero, tourism arrivals in the Philippines increased by 1.5 percent to a record 3.14 million in 2008 and now accounts for 6.2 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.

“Although the global financial crisis continues to wreak havoc on the economies of many countries, I have seen positive developments that would maintain if not improve that tourism performance, especially in Bicol, this year,” the senator who hails from Sorsogon province said during a visit here.

The visit concides with the peak of the Whale Shark Interaction Season here this year that comes with the summer season on the months of March until May. (more…)

Tourism: One of the Philippines brightest options to speed up economic development

Tourism, now one of Southeast Asia’s major dollar earners, is among the Philippines’ brightest options to speed up its economic development and hasten the attainment of the goal to become a First World country in the next two decades.

There are a lot of things positively going for Philippine tourism. For one, Filipinos are natural tourism assets themselves — warm and hospitable and are largely at home with English, the world’s language of business.

The Philippines is never short of natural attractions, which are among the best in the world. Centuries of foreign rule has enriched its history and culture, which are now reflected in a wealth of historical sites and cultural festivals. (more…)

Philippines October Tourist Arrivals Flat, But 10-Month At Record

Foreign tourist arrivals into the Philippines in October were hardly changed from last years number, with a decline in the number of visitors from key markets such as China, Japan and South Korea offsetting increases from other countries, data from the Department of Tourism showed Thursday.

The data showed visitor arrivals reached 241,809, flat from the 241,745 recorded in October 2007. The Department of Tourism, however, noted that foreign tourists still climbed to a record-high 2.61 million in the first 10 months of this year, up 4% from last year’s 2.51 million.

Arrivals from South Korea, which emerged in recent years as the Philippines’ biggest tourist market, declined 9.4% on year in October to 45,007. The number of tourists from China declined 15% on year, while that from Japan fell 9.1% on year. (more…)
