Cebu Government Supports Palawan’s underground river for New Seven Wonders of Nature

Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia has asked member-provinces of the East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Forum (Eatof) to support Puerto Princesa’s Underground River in its bid to be one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

Garcia made this request during the recent Eatof Governors’ Conference, after they were asked to vote for Ha Long Bay, as part of their activities in the General Assembly. (more…)

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park registers 47.66% hike tourist arrivals in 2008

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) has registered 93,428 visitors from January to December last year, an increase of 30,157 or 47.66 percent compared to the same period in 2007 of 63,271.

PPSRNP is the Philippines’ winning entry to the second round in the ongoing global search for the seven new wonders of nature of the world.

Record from PPSRNP management office showed that of the total number of tourists who visited the Underground River, 76,065 were locals and 17,363 foreigners.

James Albert Mendoza, park manager, said the month of April has the highest tourist arrivals with 11,334 when city government hosted the Palarong Pambansa.

Mendoza said Underground River, a UNESCO-declared World Heritage Site, reputed to be the longest known navigable subterranean river in the world, is still the best seller among the numerous tourist destinations in the city. (more…)

Palawan’s Underground River: RP’s bet in the New7Wonders of Nature

The people have spoken: Palawan’s Subterranean River will represent the country to the world. Winner of the national qualifiers category, the renowned Underground River, will be the Philippines’ bet in the New7Wonders of Nature race.

Results of the first phase of voting in the Official New7Wonders of Nature campaign were revealed today at the New7Wonders Foundation headquarters.

Tourism Secretary Joseph ‘Ace’ Durano, said “We are proud to announce that the Philippine marvels have stood strong in the first round of voting. This affirms us of the support of Filipinos as well as other tourists in helping our natural sites make their mark in the global scale.”

Recently awarded for his efforts and advocacy in ecological tourism, he added, “With billions of supporters all over the globe, promotion of spectacular sites from all over the world has been set to greater heights. It is also very important to call on the sustainable promotion of these tourism sites, which are nature’s blessings.” (more…)
