Ibon-Ebon festival 2011 kicks off today

Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo is expecting thousands of foreign and local tourists to flock and watch the 4th Ibon-Ebon festival on February 4 (Friday).

Pelayo told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) on Thursday that the opening of Candaba’s 4th Ibon-Ebon festival (Birds and Eggs Festival) on Feb. 4 will start with a street parade to be participated by street dancers clad in bird costumes all moving rhythmically to the beat of drums.

Asian Poker Tour of the Philippines

You gotta love poker, right? Everyone has a bit of advice about how to win at cards, but you can always tell the ones who really know because they are sitting on the sidelines, watching everything, and chewing on their toothpick with a sort of knowing look on their face. Gambling advice is like that though, the only advice you can really get is so existential that it doesn’t make sense at all. For example, ‘know when to hold em, know when to fold em’, okay sounds good, but how?

One way might be to grab a seat at the Asian Poker Tour of the Philippines (APT) for 2011. Sure, you could pony up the money and then get your ass handed to you by the pros, but a better way might be to go as a spectator and watch how the pros really do it. While the Asian Poker Tour isn’t the highest stakes game around, it’s nothing to slouch at. It’s not uncommon for winners to walk away from the table with a quarter of a million dollars or more. So, don’t bother counting your money when you are sitting at the table because it’s probably either too much or too little to bother with. (more…)

Poker Tournaments in the Philippines

There are a couple of things that Filipinos love. The water, family, fish, and of course, poker. There isn’t much better than sitting down with the thought that you might win some cash. Even if it’s just a little, even if it’s from family and friends. One thing is for sure though, no one sits down expecting to lose. Whether you are playing online poker or just sitting with family or friends for home games, the excitement doesn’t end at the seat. It just begins.

For those who would rather watch than play, there is the Filipino Poker Tour. This national poker event is televised so that the whole nation can take part in the high stakes drama and fun. Who watches poker? Apparently a lot of us do, because these particular tournaments have shattered viewership records for entire five events that took place in the first season. Not only did the home crowds enjoy the action, but the live crowds were huge too.

Why the excitement? One reason is because Filipinos that were good with cards but were not millionaires are now swimming in their poker achieved wealth from the tournament. That’s right, the Filipino Poker Tour has created millionaires from great card players. Not bad for a card game, right?

Mike Tyler, Kent del Rosario, Neil Acre, Joshua Riveira, and Ramil Tandoc won big big money in the Filipino Poker Tournament and the players this year are facing even bigger pots and more excitement.

The tour usually consists of Texas Hold Em which is one of the most exciting poker games you can play. Players win their seats through a combination of play or buying into the game. You can buy in in advance or you can show up and high roll your way into the match by buying into the event on the day of a hand. Either way, don’t let them see you sweat!

15 out-of-town contingents to join Sinulog Festival 2011 parade

Fifteen provinces and cities outside Cebu will join some 30 local contingents in next month’s Sinulog grand parade, which will also feature 500 performers for the grand finale.

The Sinulog 2011 edition will pay tribute to the Chinese community and celebrate Chinese influence in the local culture and economy.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) executive director Ricky Ballesteros said although they cannott match the production numbers during the opening of the Beijing Olympics, they will try to do something similar to give the parade an authentic Chinese feel.

Aside from the performances, the stage and street décor for the grand parade will also have a touch of Chinese, including the use of huge drums and other Chinese musical instruments.

The contingents will still perform the traditional “two steps forward, one step backward” Sinulog dance, but organizers expect the music and props to feature Chinese influences. (more…)

Voluntourism in the Philippines : Traveling for a cause

For some people, traveling would mean traversing a famous city and having a taste of other people’s culture.

Scenic and over-the-top destinations would come first into a person’s mind who loves to travel. Others seek for a more profound purpose for travelling which means giving back to the environment or community and devoting time to help and promote humanity in destinations they have chosen.

Travel volunteering gives interested people an opportunity to enjoy the fun of traveling and serving others for charitable cause.

This is also called volunteer vacations or voluntourism which lets one give a little back on his travels. The volunteering side of voluntourism involves teaching projects, engaging in environmental activities, training locals for better livelihood, and youth building. These projects are offered by companies and other organizations.

Engaging in voluntourism could be a good respond to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon’s call to strengthen the institutional frameworks that support volunteerism. (more…)
