Calicoan Island Resorts – A Tropical island paradise and sanctuary

calicoan samar beach resortA sanctuary of privacy and indulgence highlighted by tropical landscape and surrounded by the relaxing sound of the ocean – this is how Calicoan Beach and Surfing Resorts, which was launched on August 10, will win the hearts of local and international tourists.Calicoan Island boasts of miles of white sand beaches. With powerful swells rolling in from the Pacific over the 10,000 meters Philippine Deep, Calicoan is a surfer’s paradise.

The rich diversity of the area is evident when one sees the exotic species being sold. The surrounding waters support several marine based industries such as fish, seaweed, and pearl farming.

In the middle of the island are six lagoons ringed by forest, the largest being 30 hectares in size. At the cliffside margin of Calicoan’s forests are dozens of caves. (more…)

Summer Blast

tinalisayan island

There’s always about summer that excites everyone. I know that the heat is more than scourging, punitive really when you think about it. But when immaculately white beaches and fine sand come to mind, everything’s forgotten. No amount of excessively damaging tropical heat can hold me from hitting the sea and the sand, regardless of my poor ‘beach’ physique state. Really, it is horrible so I’d spare you of mind-boggling, unnecessary intestine-twisting workout sight of my even half-naked pictures. (more…)

Finding one great adventure in Siquijor

san juan beach in siquijor

Upon stepping on its white shores, one would wonder how this island was named “Island of Fire.” For one thing, the island has an ambience of peace despite the chaos of tricycle drivers hawking their services to you. And another, the soft blue and green background (sky + sea + forest) will not make you think of flames; instead, it will conjure mental images of a hammock and a good book.

Then again, “Fire” does not have to be about flames.

It turns out the Spaniards (16th century) called it that because of fireflies that abound the island at that time, which was full of Molave trees. From the passing galleons, the little lights would burn among the forests of Siquijor, hence the name.

It is said that only beautiful and healthy places attract and sustain thousands of fireflies. Luckily for us, Siquijor remains so. (more…)

Paradise Philippines : The Prized Archipelago

puerto galera encenada beach resort

Somewhere in Southeast Asia between the Philippine Sea and the East China Sea, east of Vietnam, south of Taiwan and just north of Indonesia, lies a much neglected but historically and ecologically prized archipelago known as the Philippines. This understated cluster of 7,107 islands is the perfect tropical getaway balanced with just enough colonial cultural intrigue and undulating urban energy to keep you going. Despite the country’s somewhat turbulent recent history, the Philippines has reached a level of stability making no better time than now to travel the wonders of the island-nation. (more…)

Shooting the Rapids – Pagsanjan Falls

Pagsanjan FallWith short planning time and limited budget, we decided to stay in Manila for the 5 day holiday. Not wanting to do nothing for these rare vacation moments, we decided to do a day trip in Pagsanjan Falls. I’ve been hearing about this place since I was a kid but I’ve never really had the chance to go so its pretty exciting to see what this place is all about.

Pagsanjan is about 2 hours away from Makati. We left Makati at 730 am on a Good Friday so there were almost no cars on the road. To get there, take the South Super Highway all the way down to the last exit — Calamba, Laguna. Follow the road that leads to Los Banos, Laguna. Take the main road and you’ll get to Pagsanjan, Laguna. You’ll be passing the municipalities of Los Banos, Pila and Sta. Cruz. Enjoy the ride! The view of the trees and the rice fields reminds me how great it is to be out of Manila! Wonderful! We got to the resort at 930 am. (more…)

Weekend Getaway: Subic

by: Nestor Santos

subic safariFor many centuries, Subic Bay was recognized as a deep safe harbour. Realizing Subic Bay’s potentials, the Spaniards used the bay as a port to defend and maintain the Philippines as a part of their empire in the 17th century. In 1885, it was built into a naval base that utilized the safe harbors and natural resources.

After their victory over the Spaniards in 1898, a naval repair and supply base in Subic Bay was established by the Americans. It was only reachable by sea until 1932 when the zigzag roads were opened linking Subic Bay and Olongapo to the rest of the Philippines.

The Japanese bombed Subic Bay in 1941 and was held by them until the US took back the Philippines in 1945. The naval base was returned to the control of the United States. The two invasions by the Japanese and Americans produced a number of bombed or scuttled naval ships in Subic Bay. Scuba divers from around the world are now enjoying these wrecks in their underwater graveyards. (more…)
