British travel restrictions to east Mindanao Philippines now lifted

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) amended its travel advisory to the Philippines by lifting travel restrictions to the “eastern side of Mindanao.” With limitations eased, the tourism industry prepares for increased arrivals and travel activity in Davao and Caraga regions, which are known as cultural and eco-adventure destinations.

According to Secretary Ace Durano of the Department of Tourism (DOT), “This development signals growth in travel brought about by the strong security measures now being implemented in the area. The best thing about this is that the local communities will directly benefit, with an additional demand to meet.”

“Amendments will encourage tourists from the UK to experience nature, adventure, and culture that the island of Mindanao has to offer,” he added. (more…)

Nayong Pilipino in Clark to showcase Philippines pre-colonial, colonial past

The Nayong Pilipino at the former Clark Expo Zone, which had its soft-opening in May this year, will focus on the pre-colonial and colonial aspects of Philippine history, according to its executive director Charito Planas.

This refers to the period before Spanish and American colonization in the 15th century, when indigenous Philippine homes and other cultural artifacts were barely influenced by foreign elements.

Thus, she said, there will be a fully-equipped mosque, which is to be supported by the Saudi Arabian embassy, with a Zamboanga-style vinta cruising an artificially-made rivulet to boot, to represent the country’s Islamic or Arabic heritage.

To represent China’s over-reaching influence, a replica of a Chinese junk, complete with porcelains and vases, will also be seen at the Nayon-Clark.

Planas also said that real Aetas will form part of Nayon, who will demonstrate survival techniques that are a metaphor of the Filipinos’ survival instincts. (more…)

Cebu City urged to draft holistic tourism program for Russian tourists

The Russian Federation’s honorary consul in Cebu has urged local stakeholders to participate in her agenda for a holistic tourism program for Cebu as more Russian tourists are expected to travel to tourist destinations like the Philippines.

Russian Federation Honorary Consul in Cebu Armi Garcia stressed the need for “cultural immersion; synergy between tourism and academe; and understanding the relationship between tourism, trade and investment.

”The liberalization of Russian travel is good news since it would mean a new wave of income potential. But it could also be bad news for tourism players whose hands are suddenly full and couldn’t deliver the demands of an unfamiliar market,” said Garcia during the 5th Cebu Business Month Tourism Congress.

The Department of Tourism reported 128-percent increase of Russian tourist arrivals to Cebu in 2007.

”Russians spend more, about USD100 per day, and stay longer, from a minimum of nine days to a maximum of 21 days. The average spending per Russian tourist would be more than USD2,000,” said Verna Buensuceso, head of the Department of Tourism-Tourism Planning and Promotion’s Team Europe. (more…)
