Philippine Department of Tourism expects 3M tourist arrivals in 2009

The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) projects a 3-4M tourist arrivals this 2009 despite the global financial crunch.

This projection is due to the momentum generated by the agency’s aggressive sales blitz in its major and emerging tourism markets like China, Russia and other European countries. DOT launched recently DOTs Tourism Apprentice Program, another investment of the department to train students of tourism-related courses as DOT’s ambassadors by exposing them to our tourism destinations.

These include Davao, Palawan, Cebu, Boracay, Iloilo, Bohol and Bacolod. The apprentice program will tap graduating students from several private schools as well as state-owned schools with the support of Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

With the freeze of hiring abroad due to the global financial crisis, DOT expects the graduates to tourism-related courses to be employed in the Philippines. DOT is eyeing the five-million mark in tourism arrivals by 2010, when the global economy is expected to bounce back.

The Department of Tourism is confident to create 3,000 new jobs this year in support to President Arroyo’s program to provide one million new jobs in the first six months of 2009, as it eyes 3 to 4 million tourist arrivals this year.

Despite the global financial crunch, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano is confident of continued tourism activities and attain its target within range of 3-4 million tourist arrivals this year owing to the momentum generated by the agency’s aggressive sales blitz in its major and emerging tourism markets including China, Russia and other European countries.

The DOT secretary expects the new hotel rooms totaling about 3,000 that would be opened up this year would yield 3,000 new jobs based on the one is to one ratio.

Durano launched recently the DOT’s Tourism Apprentice Program another “investment” of the department to train students of tourism-related course as DOT’s ambassadors by exposing them to our tourism destinations.

These include Davao, Palawan, Cebu, Boracay, Iloilo, Bohol and Bacolod. Durano stressed the Philippines has edge over its neighboring countries owing to its variety of choices in beauty and bounty.

“We are a blessed country, so much beauty and so much bounty. Our destinations offer different charm and different experiences,” Durano said.

The apprentice program will tap graduating students from private schools as well as state-owned schools with the support of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The private schools included in the program are the Arellano University, University of Sto.Tomas, Centro Escolar University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, College of the Holy Spirit, De Ocampo Memorial School, Emilio Aguinaldo College, St. Scholastica’s College, Sta. Catalina College, University of Manila, San Beda College, University of the East, Far Eastern University, Feati University, Lyceum of the Philippines, Philippine Women’s University, San Sebastian College Recoletos, St. Jude college and St. Paul University, Manila.

With the freeze of hiring abroad due to the global financial crisis, Durano expects graduates of tourism-related courses to be employed in the Philippines.

The bustling activities in the tourism sector are manifestations of the confidence of investors like the Ayalas and George Yang of the McDonald”s chain.

The two Filipino investors are putting in money in improving the Caticlan airport near Boracay. The Department of Tourism is eyeing the five-million mark in tourism arrivals by 2010, when the global economy is expected to bounce back.

An influx of tourists over recent months has seen employment in the Philippines boom, according to new figures from the country’s Department of Tourism.

The government says global marketing campaigns saw 3.09 million visitors enter the country in 2007, with a further 3.4 million expected this year.

In April alone, arrivals figures were up 4.3 per cent on last year’s total of the same month.

Tourism secretary Ace Durano told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA): “These developments further benefit a greater part of the nation as more quality jobs are generated and more wealth enters our country.”

He predicted the tourism industry will expand further in terms of infrastructure and man power to accommodate the five million tourist target set for 2010.

Last month Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo revealed Thailand and the Philippines are jointly pushing for a common visa among South East Asian countries to boost tourism further.

[...]

The Department of Tourism (DOT) will hold another Tourism Jobs Fair (TJF) in Cebu City on March 13 to 14 this year to help the booming tourism industry meet its growing manpower requirements.

DOT Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the Tourism Job Fair in Cebu should help the tourism industry, particularly in Central Visayas, which is now emerging as the country’s tourism hub.

”The growth in the industry’s demand for skilled workers and professionals is quite enormous in the light of the country’s sustained increases in tourism volume. The DOT’s 2008 target of 3.5 million foreign arrivals and the continued influx of tourism investments, makes the 3rd TJF an absolute necessity,” Durano said.

The 3rd TJF, which will be at the SM City Cebu on March 13 to 14, comes on the heels of the 3.09 million foreign arrivals and 4.885 billion dollars foreign exchange receipts that the DOT has posted for 2007.

The TJF has proven to be effective in generating employment for the industry since it is the country’s only job fair that focuses on tourism enabling the DOT to create a system for methodical matching between the applicants’ qualifications and the industry’s skills requirements, the DOT said.

Jobseekers can file their applications by registering online at www.tourismjobs. ph, where DOT-accredited employers posted job openings.

Prospective applicants may register online for the early evaluation of their qualifications and find possible job offerings this early.

The accredited employers for the Tourism Job Fair are airline companies, shipping/cruise companies, hotels, resorts, restaurants, travel agencies, tour operators, convention and exhibition centers, spa and wellness establishments, recruitment firms, golf clubs, malls and department stores, call centers and business process outsourcing companies, banks, schools, government agencies, and entertainment outfits, among others.

The various sectors in the tourism industry contributed significantly to the historic 7.3 percent growth in the gross domestic product in 2007.

The industry encompasses a wide range of economic sector with an influence that goes as far as agriculture manufacturing, finance, real estate, energy and transportation, among many others, DOT’s statement said.

”Thus, the TJF, as a key component of the DOT’s holistic growth program is also our way of physically and directly cascading the fruits of economic progress to the grassroots,” Durano said.
