Last February was my “semi annual” trip back to Davao City. This time we decided to go south of Davao, particularly Mati Davao Oriental. On our 3 days 2 night stay, our first stop over was of all places, along the highway overlooking the “sleeping dinosaur”. The view was very, very nice.

After depositing our stuff at the Tourism complex (imagine the overnight stay with two double beds and an extra bed was only P550! that’s with its own T&B). We went straight to the still under construction Kapitolyo with the view of the sea. I got my glimpse of Mati sunset at their very own baywalk hehehe.

Next day we packed up our stuff and moved to the Botona Beach Resort @ Dahican (overnight stay was priced at P1,500.00). Then just a little before lunch we packed our food and went to Cinco Beach Resort @ Masao where we had our lunch and waited for our bangkero to pick us up and deposit us to Wanniban Island. I was in for a surprise! Thou i know that there can’t be another beach front with the same powdery white sand as that of Boracay, still Wanniban proved me wrong! The sand was powdery smooth and white, my feet gets lost everytime i stepped on it! the waters were so clear and you can actually see the the colors of the sea from clear to green to blue!

Â

Â

before heading home, we dropped by the Mayo beach Resort, where the infinity pool was definitely a site to behold. Water from the pool goes directly out to the sea…

Our stay in Mati was another wonderful revelation of the beauty of our country of the pristine beaches, untouched and “virgin” locations of our provinces. Once again, I can say that I am proud to be a Filipino! hehehehe

[...]

Stirring up enterprises, generating employment, increasing farmers’ income, turning idle lands into productive lots are rolled into one as Tagum City bids to become the region’s Durian capital.

Beyond gaining the name Durian Capital, the City government wants to help Durian farmers who have been beneficiaries of plant-now-pay later program of the local government, to directly access the market for them to enjoy a much better price than what middlemen can offer, Regional and Tagum City Tourism Council chairperson Alma Uy said.

It is staging a two-week event, the Durian Festival which will run from September 2 to September 16 at Tagum City Freedom Park.

Other than offering durian to feast on, the event is expected to unfold a package of entertainment such as durian culinary arts competitions, lectures on beverage and pastry making out of durian and durian farm tours.

While the festival basically offers a good time for Durian farmers to generate income it will empower students from schools and colleges in the city to gain knowledge in doing business as a value-added venture of producing Durian.

“We also want to generate employment and create more businesses out of the industry,” Uy said.

Among others, there will be lectures on making ensaymada, Durian jam, Durian tarts, Durian candies, Durian cakes and Durian coffee.

The “Eat All You Can” of Chanee and Monthong Durian will cap the last day of the festival on September 16, but farm tours will go on even beyond the event.

Meanwhile, Uy said the organizing committee had decided to peg prices of Durian sold during the festival at P40 to P45 a kilo, a level which, she said, is favorable for the farmers and affordable for the consuming public.

While other selling points of Durian could drop prices off to a much lower level, those sold during the festival have added value because “we are giving a much better ambience with a variety of entertainment,” Uy explained.

Uy, however wanted to correct the wrong impression that Tagum City wanted to grab an event that was of Davao City in origin.

“No. There is no such thing as Durian Festival in Davao City that is supported by the city government,” she said.

Tagum City currently has about 200 hectares planted with Durian. It may not have a huge volume Davao City has but Uy said the Durian Festival organizing committee can readily get a back-up supply from growers in other areas of Davao del Norte and in Compostela Valley.

On the other hand, Faustino Salting, president of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley Fruit Industry Development Council in the same forum could not ascertain the volume of Durian that could be made available during the Festival.

In a separate interview, he placed the estimate at 150 tons at half a ton in each of the 20 stalls within the 15-day duration of the festival.

Salting said projection on production and supply level could hardly be determined because there had been no available profile of the Durian industry.

“We have to work on this along with improving the quality of our produce and the volume of our production” he said.

He, however, said that the event is a factor paving way towards turning idle grasslands into productive lots.

“Durian can help prevent floods, can help us always experience good weather here, and can make those idle lands productive,” he said.

The word ”jeepney” is commonly believed to be a conflation of “jeep” and “jitney”, or “jeep” and “knee”, the latter referring to the jeepney’s crowded face-to-face seating.

When American troops began to leave the Philippines at the end of World War II, hundreds of surplus jeeps were sold or given to local Filipinos. Locals stripped down the jeeps to accommodate several passengers, added metal roofs for shade, and decorated the vehicles with vibrant colors and bright chrome plating and hood ornaments.

The jeepney rapidly emerged as a popular and creative way to reestablish inexpensive public transportation, which had been virtually destroyed during World War II. Recognizing the widespread use of these vehicles, the Philippine government began to place restrictions on their use. Drivers now must have specialized driver’s license, regular routes, and reasonably fixed fares.

Manufacturers

Although the original jeepneys were simply refurbished military jeeps (Willys), modern jeepneys are now produced by independently owned workshops and factories within the Philippines. In the central Philippine island of Cebu, the bulk of jeepneys are built from second-hand Japanese trucks, originally intended for hauling cargo rather than passengers. These are euphemistically known as “surplus” trucks.

Recently the jeepney industry has faced threats to its survival in its current form. Most of the larger builders have either gone bankrupt or have switched to manufacturing other products. Currently there are 2 classes of jeepney builders in the Philippines. The backyard builders produce 1-5 vehicles a month, source their die stamped pieces from one of the larger manufacturers, and work with used engines and chassis from salvage yards (usually the Isuzu 4BA series diesel engines or the Mitsubishi Fuso 4D30 diesel engines–a shift from the Isuzu C240 engine that powered early jeepneys). The second type of manufacturer is the large volume manufacturer. They have 2 sub groups: the PUJ (Public Utility Jeep) and the large volume metal-stamping companies that supply parts as well as complete vehicles.

The jeepney builders in the past were mostly concentrated in Cebu City, Las Piñas City and Cavite; however, with the recent slowdown of sales, many of the smaller builders have gone out of business. The largest manufacturer of owner-type jeeps in the Philippines is David Motors Inc. in Quezon City, located on the north side of Metro Manila. The largest manufacturer of vintage style army jeepneys is MD Juan.

Passenger jeepneys are also facing increasing restrictions and regulations for pollution controls, as they increase amounts of traffic and consume lots of fuel. A recent study published in a Metro Manila newspaper compared the fuel use of a 16-passenger jeepney to a 54-passenger air-conditioned bus and found that the fuel consumption for both was the same. With major roads clogged by empty jeepneys cruising for fares, there is intense pressure to remove them from the streets of Metro Manila and other cities.

The cost for a new jeepney will also rise due to the increased costs of raw materials like steel and the need to use new engines to power their vehicles. The supply of remanufactured used engines is slowly dropping as wear and age take their toll and the number of factories that rebuild engines diminishes.

The jeepney businesses in the Philippines are struggling to compete with imported used vehicles, and many manufacturers are moving to build more modern-looking jeepneys such as Hummer lookalikes and oversized Toyota van-style passenger jeepneys with Toyota headlights, hoods and bumpers. The jeepney industry has evolved more quickly in the past 2 years than it has in the past 50 and the chromey, loud, boisterous icon is soon to be a vehicle of the past.

Other manufacturers/marks include Mega (which also produces the Lanceta line of jeepneys, in Lipa City), Malaguena (whose factory in Cavite was the site of one of the very first Yield Stops of The Amazing Race), LGS Motors, Morales, Hebron, Marinel (jeepney makers based in Rizal Province which is popular for their ”patok” (popular) jeepneys which are equipped with high-powered sound system, aggressive fonts, and their speed) and Sarao (which is the most famous and based in Las Pinas City), and Armak (one of the largest). Another manufacturer PBJ motors manufactured jeepneys in Pampanga using techniques derived from Sarao motors.

Already in production is a jeepney the size of a small bus and is equipped with state-of-the-art vehicle technology (brand-new engine and drivetrain) and Thermo-King-brand airconditioning intended for buses.
