Philippines to hosts world wakeboard tilt in 2008

THE PHILIPPINES won the bid to host the 2008 IWSF (International Water Ski Federation) Cable Wakeboard World Championships to be held in Camarines Sur.

international water ski federationCamarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr. made the announcement yesterday when he appeared in the PSA Forum yesterday at the Pantalan Restaurant in Manila.

“We really made a strong case to host the 2008 World Cable Championships,” said Villafuerte about the meet to be held at the Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex.

“We were very optimistic right from the start because we knew for a fact that the facilities and the technical specifications of the Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex are truly world-class, equal if not actually superior to those in other countries,” added the youthful governor in the public sports program sponsored by PAGCOR, Manila Mayor Lito Atienza and Manila Sports Council chairman Ali Atienza.

Villafuerte, also the Philippine Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (PWWF) chairman, said the hosting of the event is considered a tremendous feat as it bested other more established and popular ski cable parks in the United States as well as countries in Europe and Asia.

The six-hectare Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex, located within the provincial capitol complex, has a six-point cable ski system – the only one in the world.

It has a Wi-Fi hotspot for people who want to have fun while staying connected, as well as recreation facilities such as a pool, spa pavilions, a beach volleyball area, a clubhouse for dining, games and entertainment, a pro shop and an elevated grandstand for spectators.

Another additional attraction of the water sports complex is that it has the majestic Mt. Isarog for its backdrop.

It officially opened shop last May 21.

Villafuerte boasted that even IWSF president Kuno Ritschard was amazed by the excellent facilities and the enthusiasm and passion of the PWWF, as well as the international federation’s desire to host the championships outside of Europe.

The PWWF was also accredited by the IWSF and the World Wakeboard Council during the opening of the water sports park.

Tanauan: Philippines skimboarding capital

Tacloban City (August 14) –- In an effort to be aligned with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s vision for Central Philippines Mega Region to become the Tourism Capital of the Philippines, the local government of Tanauan is taking big steps to deserve the title – skimboarding capital of the Philippines.

Yes, Tanauan would like to be remembered, not only as the town of intellectuals as it has always been known, not only as the town where Skimboarding started. Nowadays, it is working hard to prove that it is the Skimboarding Capital of the Philippines.

Today, another regionwide Skimboarding Competition is being held in Tanauan in connection with the Town Fiesta on August 15 to honor the town’s Patroness, Our Lady of Assumption. About 48 participants from all over the Region joined the competition which was supported by no less than Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, Congresswoman of the first district of Leyte Remedios Petilla and this year’s hermana mayor Mrs. Mimi Aniban Maderazo and her family.

Today’s Skimboarding competition was well-attended by balikbayans from the United States, from Manila and by visitors coming from the different parts of the Region.

Tanauan has hosted two National Skimboarding Competitions in 2005 and 2006. Because of the success of the activity last April, Tanauan is now embarking on hosting the first International Skimboarding Competition next year. This early, the local government unit already has the support of the Skim Asia Federation and the Philippine Skimboarding Federation.

Two manufacturers of skimboards and skimboarding paraphernalia from Malaysia and Australia have also expressed their support not only in bringing in skimboarders from their countries but to bring in their products so that the Filipinos will know the latest trends in skimboarding equipment.

Tanauan has hosted Skimboarding Clinics with the support of the Congresswoman of the First District of Leyte, in order to make more people know about a watersports called skimboarding.

As Mayor Roque Tiu said, who would ever think that the watersports which was taught by a guy from California who was wooing a Tanauan lass, would become a major sport in Tanauan? Surely, Big steps come from small steps. Mayor Tiu said the town has made small steps and it is determined to take bigger steps to make Tanauan the Skimboarding Capital of the Philippines.

Quiksilver Open Cloud Nine Readies on Siargao Island

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 August, 2006 : – - A relatively untouched tropical paradise in the southeast of the Philippines Archipelago is set to host an international field of world-class surfers for the Quiksilver Open Cloud Nine.

Siargao Island; a jungle-drenched jewel with its virgin beaches and warm clear waters will transform as surfers from Australia, Bali, Japan, South Africa and the USA test their skills against arguably the world’s premier right-hand tubing reef-break, the infamous “Cloud Nine”.

At the 12th annual exclusive specialty event held during the Philippine’s typhoon season, the Quiksilver Open Cloud Nine offers a limited round of 32 surfers the chance to compete in one of surfing’s elite arenas.

Scheduled to commence on the 26th September, 2006 and run through to the 1st October, 2006, the unique Quiksilver Open Cloud Nine boasts an astounding USD$11,000 prize purse as well as an exciting second-chance format that will ensure surfers a six-day surfing window for a mere 9 hours of competition surfing. As a result, surfers will be given optimal surfing conditions to test their tube-riding prowess.

Due to Cloud Nine’s proximity to the Philippine Deep, big swells from the Pacific Ocean roll in from the second deepest water in the world to create flawless hollow barrelling waves.

Last year’s event didn’t disappoint, setting the scene for some of the most memorable competitive surfing ever-seen in the Philippines with Typhoon Lawagon providing competitors with perfect 4-6ft reeling tubes. 2005 event runner-up Josh Fuller (Cabarita, NSW, Australia) described last year’s event as, “the best surfing event I have ever been involved in and the best surf trip I have ever been on.”

Similarly, Dayyan Neve (Manly, Sydney, Aus), who presently leads the arduous 2006 World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings after his impressive runner-up finish at the Mr Price Pro, South Africa, holds a comparable bond with the notorious break.  “Last year’s event goes down as perhaps my most enjoyable surfing experience,” explained Neve.

“It was not only made better by the quality of the waves, but how the event organizers maximized the best conditions for competitors.” “Cloud Nine begins as an A-frame peak, but once it hits the reef it funnels off into one of the world’s supreme right-hand tubes. I can’t wait for September to come around!”

2003 winner and 2004 event runner-up, Mark Mathews (Maroubra, Sydney, Aus) has had a long-standing ‘bittersweet’ relationship with the reeling reef-break of “Cloud Nine”, enjoying a string of emphatic competitive victories at the same time as feeling the wrath of its shallow reef.

Mathews was forced to withdraw from last year’s event due to a horrific wipe-out incurred during a free-surfing session at the famed right-hander. The world-renowned charger was just inches away from making yet another deep barrel when a solid 6-ft chunk of raw ocean swell drove him off his board into the shallow reef below, resulting in a broken foot and shattering his dream of claiming yet another win at Cloud Nine.

Renowned Balinese surfers Wayan “Betet” Merta, Mustofa Jeksen, and Tipi Jabrik will also travel to the neighbouring Philippines to contest the six-day specialty event and will no push the performance levels of the international field.

“The Quiksilver Open Cloud Nine is such a unique event held in an amazing location” stated Brad Cunningham, Marketing and Sales Manager, Quiksilver SE Asia.  “The level of support received from the surfers is a testament to the quality of both the event and the hospitality extended by the people of the Philippines- we are just stoked to be a part of this”.

The ‘Quiksilver Open Cloud Nine” is proudly supported by the Philippines Government of Surigao Del Norte and the Philippines Department of Tourism.
