Bohol plants 18,000 seedlings in an hour for “Trees for Life”

tree plantingTagbilaran City — SIMULTANEOUS tree planting activities in Bohol turned in at least 18,939 seedlings of narra and mahogany planted in military reservations, open public lands in an hour as the government launched the Trees for Life with 2 million trees all over the country by 2010.

The Bohol figure was reported by at least two military units who joined President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, representatives from government and non-government organizations and volunteers in affirming the commitment to protect the environment through the Trees for Life (TFL) project Wednesday, July 18. Lobo : A Protected Fish Sanctuary

Lobo is about 150 kilometers from Manila.  It is located near the southern tip of Batangas province. Lobo offers many attractions.  It has good white sand beaches whose ocean floor slopes gradually for nearly 200 meters before a drop-off.  It has very good coral and marine life on some of its beaches that attract many snorklers, scuba divers and underwater photographers.   It also has protected mangrove forests and fish sanctuaries. Philippines revokes permit to build spa on Taal Volcano

philippines volcano taal spaThe Philippines has revoked a permit issued to a South Korean company to build a spa resort on a restive volcano just outside the capital, an official said Friday. The construction of the spa on the crater of Taal Volcano in Batangas province, 50 kilometres south of Manila, had been suspended since last week amid protests over possible hazards.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) initially issued an environmental compliance certificate allowing Jung Ang Interventure Corp to go through with the project.

But DENR Secretary Angelo Reyes said his office has now cancelled the certificate after an investigation found that the Korean firm did not meet all requirements. (more…)

Regional Ecotourism Committee of Region 8 to be handled by Department of Tourism

philippines department of tourismTacloban City (July 1, 2007) — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region 8 will turn over the chairmanship of the Regional Ecotourism Committee to the Department of Tourism Region 8, in simple turn over ceremony which will be conducted at the DENR Multi-Purpose Hall on July 03, 2007 at 1:30 in the afternoon.

DENR Regional Executive Director and Chairman of the Regional Ecotourism Committee Alfredo S. Pascual informed that pursuant to Executive Order 111, this is now the turn of the Department of Tourism to provide the direction and lead the implementation of the programs and projects of the National Ecotourism Development Council, the National Ecotourism Steering Committee and the Regional Ecotourism Committee for the next three years. Giant mushroom crops up in Roxas City

Roxas City — City agricultural authorities are coordinating efforts with various concerned government agencies to examine a flush (colony) of unknown species of “giant mushrooms” which has been discovered by a resident of Arnaldo Boulevard at Barangay Baybay here recently.

The examination is aimed to determine if the newly found mushroom is edible and capable of artificial propagation. (more…)

Verde Island : Diver’s Paradise in Mindoro

verde island wall dive site mindoroVerde Island Passages is one of the busiest sea lanes in the Philippines. It is located between Batangas and Oriental Mindoro. Commercial and industrial ships pass through this passage to reach Manila from their port of origin in the south. They also use this sea lane to reach the southern part of the country from the Port of Manila.

Verde Island Passage is a popular domestic sea route connecting Batangas, Marinduque, Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental and Romblon.
