Traversing Palawan’s untainted shores

palawan paradiseby Aaron Joel Santos

I’m in the Philippines, sitting at a six-person dining room table made of bamboo. It’s the kind of table found all across Southeast Asia, but this one is special. This one is unconvincingly strapped to the top of an old bus speeding down an unpaved highway on the island of Palawan.

Apparently, this is how one gets around, dodging wayward branches and low-hanging power lines.

Thirty minutes ago I was stranded with two friends at an intersection in the middle of nowhere. In a town somewhat humorously named Salvacion. Now we’re watching storm clouds creep across the horizon as the road unfurls before us like a roll of film over the undulating landscape.

The Philippines is a staggeringly beautiful country, still largely untouched and unrefined. And Palawan is considered its last frontier. (more…)

Island hopping, a popular treat in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

puerto princesa palawanHonda Bay, which is littered with islands, islets, atolls and corral reefs could very well be one of this locality’s prime leisure destinations, due to a wide variety of attractions that it offers. for both foreign and local tourists.

For domestic and foreign tourists, the shallow reefs that adorn the fabulous beaches of its several islets have become popular as swimming snorkeling and diving destinations.

Without any doubt, Honda Bay offer beach lovers unspoiled and uncrowded havens so rarely found anywhere else in the country.

Situated in what appears to be a highway or, close to the path of migratory birds who move as a flock between between Asia mainland and the Philippines each time the weather changes, the amazing sight of hundreds of them flying in some kind of formation, is a real added treat, because this does not come so often.

In fact, only recently, as a group of Filipino news managers savored and recorded on video a very rare opportunity of witnessing first hand, snipes (some kind of a white, long-legged migratory bird), numbering to a thousand or so, flying across the bow of their rented boat and headed towards the west. Puerto Princesa aiming to become “Sports Tourism Capital of the Philippines”

City Mayor Edward Hagedorn of Puerto Princesa in Palawan said the city will soon become the country’s “Sports Tourism Capital” as efforts are well underway in making the pristine city a haven for local and foreign outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Hagedorn said that while Puerto Princesa has long been one of the favorite tourist destinations of the country because of its scenic spots, the city government had, in the past years, undertaken efforts to woo another class of tourists – avid outdoor sports enthusiasts.

He said that “besides having exotic islands, water falls, hot springs and the longest navigable underground river system in the world, Puerto Princesa also boasts of having an international dive site along its coast and pristine mountain ranges suitable for hiking, biking and mountain climbing.”

The city government is also bent on making the city a viable venue for local and international sports events as it hosts this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

“We hope that Puerto Princesa’s potentials as an international sporting venue, both local and international, would be showcased when the national games start next month,” Hagedorn said, stressing the enormous efforts undertaken by local officials in preparation for the sport spectacle. (more…)
