Puerto Princesa’s “underground river” gets booster from British envoy

puerto princesa underground riverThe city government’s campaign to include Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP), famously known as “Underground River” got a shot in the arm from the British envoy to the Philippines, no less.

Ambassador Peter Beckingham and his wife, Jill, visited the “Underground River” on Tuesday. The attraction is one of the nominees in the ongoing worldwide search for the “New Seven Wonders of Nature”.

The couple and their party was accompanied by Mayor Edward Hagedorn during the tour of the park.

Currently, the underground river ranks No. 8, in the Live Top 77 ranking at www.new7wonders.com , the UNESCO-declared World Heritage.

Tubbataha Reef, also found in Palawan, continues to improve its rank in the contest by placing third, while Chocolate Hills ranks number 4 now. (more…)

Traversing Palawan’s untainted shores

palawan paradiseby Aaron Joel Santos

I’m in the Philippines, sitting at a six-person dining room table made of bamboo. It’s the kind of table found all across Southeast Asia, but this one is special. This one is unconvincingly strapped to the top of an old bus speeding down an unpaved highway on the island of Palawan.

Apparently, this is how one gets around, dodging wayward branches and low-hanging power lines.

Thirty minutes ago I was stranded with two friends at an intersection in the middle of nowhere. In a town somewhat humorously named Salvacion. Now we’re watching storm clouds creep across the horizon as the road unfurls before us like a roll of film over the undulating landscape.

The Philippines is a staggeringly beautiful country, still largely untouched and unrefined. And Palawan is considered its last frontier. (more…)

Brooke’s Point in Palawan : Origin of world’s biggest pearl

bookes point in palawanBrooke’s Point, Palawan : This progressive town is the origin of the Pearl of Allah or the Pearl of Lao Tzu, the biggest pearl in the world.

The Tridacna shell, weighing almost 50 kilos of the clam “pearl” which measures 9.45 inches in diameter and weighs 6.4 kilograms is still being kept at the house of the village chief of barangay Oring-Oring in this town.

According to the Guinness’ Book of World Records, the San Francisco Gem Laboratory values the pearl at 40 million US dollars.

Manang Aisa, wife of Oring-Oring barangay captain Krustan Mattarasal, said they have kept the shell since 1969 and is frequently visited both local residents and foreigners in curiosity.  Asked If she will sell the shell, “if the price is good, why not?”, Manang Aisa, 64 years old replied.

Local researchers claim to have documented narrative evidence to indicate that the pearl originated here in 1935 and was not handed to a foreigner as a gift, as generally viewed, but actually stashed away to be sold and never returned. (more…)

Island hopping, a popular treat in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

puerto princesa palawanHonda Bay, which is littered with islands, islets, atolls and corral reefs could very well be one of this locality’s prime leisure destinations, due to a wide variety of attractions that it offers. for both foreign and local tourists.

For domestic and foreign tourists, the shallow reefs that adorn the fabulous beaches of its several islets have become popular as swimming snorkeling and diving destinations.

Without any doubt, Honda Bay offer beach lovers unspoiled and uncrowded havens so rarely found anywhere else in the country.

Situated in what appears to be a highway or, close to the path of migratory birds who move as a flock between between Asia mainland and the Philippines each time the weather changes, the amazing sight of hundreds of them flying in some kind of formation, is a real added treat, because this does not come so often.

In fact, only recently, as a group of Filipino news managers savored and recorded on video a very rare opportunity of witnessing first hand, snipes (some kind of a white, long-legged migratory bird), numbering to a thousand or so, flying across the bow of their rented boat and headed towards the west. Cuyo Island : Highly promoted on Judy Ann Santos latest movie “Ploning”

ploning the movie cuyo palawan philippinesPanoramanila Pictures Co. and Judy Ann Santos’ film “Ploning,” which was entirely shot in the picturesque Cuyo islands in Palawan, got a high recommendation, and a General Patronage (GP) classification from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). “Ploning,” which also highlights the beauty of the Filipino culture and the Filipina, can be enjoyed by moviegoers of all ages starting April 30, 2008 in Philippine theaters.

Judy Ann Santos portrays a 30 year-old Cuyonon maiden, Ploning, who patiently waits and holds on to the promise of her beloved’s return. “Ploning,” loosely based on the Cuyonon folk song with the same title, is a story of loving and waiting, of healing and forgiving.

Armed with a stellar cast composed of Gina Pareño, Mylene Dizon, Meryll Soriano, Ces Quesada, Tony Mabesa, Crispin Pineda, Eugene Domingo, Tessie Tomas, Ketchup Eusebio, Ronnie Lazaro, Joel Torre, Beth Tamayo, Jojit Lorenzo, Spanky Manikan, and local actors Cedric Amit, Lucas Agustin, Ogoy Agustin, Boodge Fernandez, and directed by production designer turned screenwriter and director, Dante Nico Garcia, “Ploning” is arguably a fruition of real-life friends’ passion for the craft and hard work, who literally and figuratively cross oceans, and climb mountains to finish the film in time for its lead actress’ 30th birthday on May 11, 2008.
