University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in Cebu to build P60-M boutique hotel to train tourism students

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in Cebu City will build its own boutique hotel that will serve as the training ground for its tourism students to help ensure enough workers for Cebu’s tourism industry.

Dr. Alicia Cabatingan, USPF president and trustee, said the construction of the Southern Skies Boutique Hotel is meant to help bridge the gap between the academe and industry requirements.

“This is one of the bold projects the school is undertaking this year. Despite the drop in enrollment, we see that this facility would help the school produce quality tourism graduates for our tourism industry,” Cabatingan said.

She said the facility will also complement USPF’s new program called the Institute of Tourism and Hospital Management (ITAHM), the umbrella program for courses like Bachelor of Science (BS) in Hotel and Restaurant Management, BS Tourism Management and BS Travel Management. (more…)

Western Visayas plans to have unified tourism zone

The Regional Tourism Council is planning to establish a unified tourism zone in Western Visayas so that all of its provinces would benefit from the tourism allure of this resort island.

Vicky Ramos-Antonino, chair of the tourism council, said she is now visiting different provinces in the region to assess the tourism strength and weaknesses in the different areas.

“We are eyeing Aklan to be the center of tourism, Iloilo and Negros Occidental provinces will highlight cultural heritage, Antique and Guimaras provinces for eco-tourism and Capiz will cater for culinary experience as the seafood capital of the country,” Antonino said.

The plan for a unified tourism zone is expected to boost the planned revival of the Panay Railway System and the open sky policy for both the Kalibo International Airport and the Iloilo Airport.

“We are doing this unified tourism zone so that provinces in the region will not be competing with each other but instead complement one another,” she added.

Once the unified tourism zone is in place, the tourism council will then be drafting tour packages to encourage tourists to explore other tourism potentials in the region.

Cebu City reopens three heritage sites

The Cebu City Government on Sunday opened to the public three sites that form the city’s culture and heritage — the Plaza Independencia, the city museum, and the city public library.

Two years after it was demolished to make way for the construction of the Cebu South Coastal Road tunnel, the Plaza Independencia is now again open for public use.

The city unveiled plaza Sunday and held the ceremonial switch-on of the plaza’s lights.

It was attended by Cebu City Mayor Michal Rama, Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, Lourdes Ong, special assistant to the President, Councilor Nida Cabrera and other city hall officials.

Cabrera, who chairs the council committee on parks and playgrounds, hopes the plaza will attract tourists to the city. (more…)

Baguio City needs more facilities for tourists

A local tourism leader here said this mountain resort needs more facilities to cater to visiting youth and family groups during summer.

City councilor Pinky Rondez, former chair of the city council committee on tourism, said this assessment was based on the fact that even the affluent youths and families here went instead to Boracay Island or Cebu City last week.

“We have limited facilities for the youths and more adventurous groups. For sure, we have the boating facilities at Burnham Lake, the world-class golf courses of Camp John Hay, the horseback riding at Wright Park and few others. But these are no longer enough to sustain the excitement of our would-be tourists,” she explained.

She disclosed that local hotels and inns only registered an average of 90 percent occupancy rate during the Lenten Season compared to other years when many transient homes were opened to summer visitors. (more…)

Iloilo City to lure more tourism investors, visitors

The city government here is looking forward to being the topmost competitive city to lure more investors and visitors alike.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog presented the initial copy of a “Briefer for Investors and A Guide for Economic Ventures” that bannered efforts to address concerns on infrastructure, peace and order and processing time of business permits.

The briefer was conceptualized by the Office of the Trade and Investments Board chaired by Felix Tiu. It contained the profile of the city, available infrastructure and facilities, transportation and communication facilities, priority investment areas, investment opportunities, business environment, business permit processing and incentives and cost of doing business.
