Masuki – Home of the original “Gupit” and delicious Siopao

Much has been said about this famous Mami house in Binondo but I only got the change to taste it last weekend. Last Saturday, A group of travel bloggers decided to go on a tour around Makati and Binondo. We initially met at Starbucks Salcedo Village before heading to the Salcedo Weekend Market which is right in front of the coffee shop. After food tasting and photo taking in Salcedo Park we immediately headed to Binondo to start our short food tour and heritage tour in San Nicolas afterwards.

A Binondo food tour will never be complete without visiting Dong Bei Dumplings. Since its Meikah and Diane’s first time to try this, we ordered two plates of freshly boiled pork and kutchay dumplings. We assumed that dumplings would suffice as an appetizer since we were planning to try other authentic cantonese dishes in Benavidez street but our loud “burp” pretty much meant our stomachs couldn’t take anymore (LOL).  Continue Reading : Masuki : The Original Ma Mon Luk

Dong Bei Dumplings: Rediscovering Binondo’s Hidden Food Haven

I was plurking one night when I saw Nina’s Invitation for a weekend Binondo Food Tour. Since I dont have any scheduled activity, I immediately signed up for this weekend food tour. While checking on the itenerary, I observed that most of the restaurants included on the food tour are all new to me and one of them is Dong Bei Dumplings.

Kutsay Dumplings @ Dong Bei Dumplings

Dongbei is generally understood to refer to the northeastern part of China. Unlike the Hongkong made dumplings which is more appealing to the eye, I find DongBei Dumplings way better because of its simplicity.  Continue Reading Dong Bei Dumplings: Binondo’s Home of Fresh Dumplings

Shangri-La to build new hotel in The Fort, Manila Philippines

Shangri-La Asia has won a major prize in the Philippines, with the signing of Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila, a new hotel scheduled to open in 2012. Located within the Fort Bonifacio former military base and city centre, the hotel with over 60 storeys will comprise 500 guestrooms and 234 apartments, the building is destined to become a Manila landmark. The new hotel will complement the company’s four existing hotel properties in the Philippines and the Shangri-La Resort and Spa, Boracay, scheduled to open at the end of 2008.

The mixed-use business, residential and retail tower will be located along Fifth Avenue and 30th, within the new, fast-developing Taguig business district. A 30-minute drive from the international airport, the hotel will also be close to the Manila Golf and Polo Club, and 10 minutes from Makati district, the capital’s financial, cultural and entertainment hub with first-class shopping malls.

Shangri-La has named US-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP as architect and Hirsch Bedner Associates will undertake the interior design for guestrooms and the main lobby. The tower will present a contemporary yet timeless design with the facade of the building tapering skyward, maximising the ocean view. (more…)

Manila : Only Destination in Asia to Place in Top 10 Yahoo! International Travel Searches for 2007

manila top search in yahoo travelActually a conglomerate of 16 cities and one municipality in the Central and Southern Luzon regions of Northern Philippines, Metro Manila is the cosmopolitan gateway to the 7,107 tropical islands of the country, and to some of the most pristine beaches in the world. Travelers should think twice before using Manila simply as a connection point, however, as the city offers much from historical sightseeing from WWII and the Spanish colonial period to some of the most luxurious spa and wellness offerings in the world.

Ranked 5th by Yahoo! for international travel searches in 2007, Manila is the pulsating hub that blends the Oriental with the occidental, the quaint with the modern and the exotic with the extraordinary. Deluxe spa facilities abound in the city, featuring relaxing, luxurious atmospheres and world class treatments, including those unique to the Philippines.

One example is the Sanctuario Spa, Salon and Organic Café, conveniently located in the heart of Manila. Sanctuario takes special bows for its hilot treatments, a traditional Filipino-style deep tissue massage performed by an authentic manghihilot who uses mysticism and incantations while kneading the muscles to remove aches and pains. Rediscovering Ongpin Aka Manila Chinatown

manila china townIf your Asia tour includes a long stay in the Philippines, we suggest that you add in a visit to Ongpin or Chinatown, which is how most people call it as well, as part of your travel program, especially if you’ll in Manila – the capital city of the country – for a while yet.

Ongpin or Chinatown may not be as popular as other places in the Philippines but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be part of your travel schedule. Not only is a visit to Ongpin guaranteed to be delightful in more ways than one, it also won’t cost you much because prices in Ongpin are more affordable than what you’d find in other cities like Makati or even Quezon City.

Ongpin is also mainly a residential town so it’s easier to tour the place rather than other cities, which would require you to take on huge buses and six-wheeler trucks just to cross the street.

Because Ongpin is not that big a town, the streets are mostly narrow, winding and filled with people. If you’re planning to drive your own car to Ongpin, you might be forced then to park somewhere and walk for the rest of the time you’ll be spending in Binondo. But that’s not really much of a punishment – except for your feet, if you’re wearing high heels! – because a lot of people really prefer to wander around Ongpin by foot. (more…)
