Davao’s Tourism sector to promote indigenous food

The tourism sector is bent on elevating indigenous foods to global standards and become more competitive in the international market because food always goes with tourism

Mary Ann M. Montemayor, managing director of Konkordans, the event organizer of the Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF) 2008 speaking at the Club 888 Forum of the Marco Polo Davao said that destinations cannot be promoted without food.

She said while Davao already had several indigenous food preparations they need still to bring these local delicacies of food to higher level.

She cited that the fruit Durian has already been elevated to gourmet standard although she said there is a lot of catching up to do.

“We have to sell Durian in a gourmet manner,” she said.

The tuna carting she said was the center stage of the previous MCF and it had been gaining ground. (more…)

The Marco Polo Davao named 2007 top hotel

The Marco Polo Davao has been rated as 2007 Hotel of the Year and the Guest Satisfaction Award for three consecutive years, which they attributed to a good team and their exemplary performance here in Davao.

Hotel General Manager Stanley Lau said Marco Polo Davao rose above other contending Marco Polo hotels namely Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel, Marco Polo Gateway Hongkong, Marco Polo Parkside Beijing, Marco Polo Shenzhen, Marco Polo Xiamen, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu and Marco Polo Wuhan.

“Good teams make it perfect and getting such award has given Davao City something to be proud of,” he said.

He said true service and genuine hospitality reflects an admirable note to the residents of the city.

He said they were rated among others on customer service, food and beverage, restaurant, human resource development and sales and marketing. (more…)

Kadayawan Festival 2008 a boon to Davao business establishments

Many business establishments in Davao City are looking forward to the holding of Kadayawan Festival as an event that draws more traffic to the city thus renewing their support to the holding of the festivities.

During the Kapehan sa Dabaw held Monday at Café Rysus of SM City, Debby A. Go, mall manager of SM City Davao acknowledged that the Kadayawan really made the city atmosphere very festive and noticed that more provincial visitors and those from other neighboring areas timed their shopping during this kind of event.

Go said that they maintain their Diamond Sponsorship with the Kadayawan Festival and they support the Davao City government and private sector that runs the festival even as she said that they are also supporting programs and projects that benefits the people of Davao.

She said even if their traffic is heaviest during December, they consider other events in Davao City as equally important especially the Kadayawan Festival.

SM group brand manager Russel D. Alaba on the other hand said they are happy to report that SM Davao is among the top performers of the SM malls in the country and that the Davao City mall is doing well. (more…)

Tourism players to converge for Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo 2008

Owners, school operators and tourism industry players of Mindanao together with the government officials of the education sector will converge in Davao City next month in time for the 3rd Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE 2008) to reconcile needs of both camps for the benefit of the students who will later seek employment.

Joji Ilagan Bian, chair of the Mindanao Technical Vocational Education and Training Association and president of the Joji Ilagan Career Centre Foundation, Inc. said at the Club 888 Forum of The Marco Polo Hotel that the MTTE offers opportunities to over 300 school operators in the island find out the kind of skills tourism industry players would need.

She said these educational institutions are offering tourism and hospitality courses and it is high time that they should know what are the appropriate qualities of graduates the industry are looking from the jobseekers by interacting face-to-face with the industry players.

The academe must now align their educational system to the requirement of the industry, she said.

New Australian ambassador visits Davao City

New Australian Ambassador His Excellency Rod Smith visited this city from 24-26 June 2008 for a series of site visits to Australian Government-funded aid programs and to witness the groundbreaking for the new Mindanao Area Police Intelligence Office in Camp Catitipan.

Ambassador Smith’s visit kicked-off with a courtesy call to Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta, Davao City’s acting mayor and Patricia Melizza Ruivivar, Chief of Staff, Office of the Mayor. He was joined by Peter Jensen, Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Counsellor and Dr. Ian D’Arcy Walsh, Philippine-Australia Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) Australian Project Director.

The acting mayor thanked the Australian Government for its “support and partnership with the city in strengthening the quality of and access to basic education and the various development trainings in Australia for Davaoeños.” As a token of friendship, the ambassador was given a symbolic key to the city.
