Davao City will hold the 1st Chinese New Year Festival on January 26 to 31 after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order 1 series 2009 which created the executive committee of the said festival.

The festival is the fruit of a united Chinese community, working together with the local government.

Figures showed that Davao City has the biggest Chinatown in terms of land area and population. It also has the biggest concentration of Chinese families who have continuously shown the value of hardwork and unity.

The festival will be opened on January 24 with the highlight to be held on the eve of January 25 until 6 in the morning.

Activities include a motorcade of various stakeholders, Chinese families, sponsors, and supporters. A unity dance will also be performed as part of the Chinese culture and traditions. Chinese lanterns will also be lighted during the main event.

The public can also view and learn Chinese cultural heritage as an exhibition will be set up in the Museo Dabawenyo.

Shoppers can also buy Chinese goods from the long-stretch of Chinatown stores along Uyanguren Street which are open until midnight.

Nightly entertainment like Chinese dances and songs will be presented for the viewers to learn and appreciate their presentation.

On January 31, the Arch of Unity and Prosperity will be unveiled as the culmination of the weeklong festival.

Moreover, Chinese families will also provide community feeding in barangays within the Chinatown area.

This is one of the many ways that the Chinese families can show concern and social responsibility to the poor families in their community.

DoT regional director Sonia Garcia said in line with the celebration, series of activities will be held, aimed at highlighting the various eco-tourism potentials of the region under the general theme of “Culture, Adventure and Nature.”

She said the events are designed to capture the growing market of young professionals and families.

The three-day activities, which will be held at the Atrium of Gaisano Mall Davao, will feature an Exhibit and Showcase where it will specifically target new and existing resorts, adventure packages, destinations, wellness and hospitality centers. It will also showcase select floral companies in the region.

Another event is the On-the-Spot Essay Writing Competition, where regional finals among public and private high school students in the Davao Region who initially qualified in their respective and provincial and city level competitions, will be conducted.

The competition focuses on the need to promote responsible tourism activities and the protection of the environment among the young and the old and the winning entries will be published in leading newspapers and dailies in the region.

A Photography Competition will also be held and is open to both amateur and professional photographers with two separate categories, namely, festival scenes and tourism destinations.

The official launching of the Search for 30-seconder Davao Region Eco-Tourism Jingle is also part of the regional activity, aimed at encouraging budding composers and hobbyists in honing their creative and artistic musical skills while helping promote responsible eco-tourism. The winning piece will be officially used in all undertakings of DoT Davao.

The Second Canon Kadayawan sa Dabaw Photo Exhibit will feature the entries of 20 finalists of the recently conducted photography competition during the 23rd Kadayawan festival last month. The winners will be declared on the first day of the showcase.

Japanese and Korean investors are considering sites in Davao City for retirement villages of their foreign nationals.

Teolulo Pasawa, Department of Trade and Industry city director for Davao City in an interview said that these investors are just validating the areas even as he said that they already had registered their businesses at the Securities and Exchange Corporation (SEC).

He said the Japanese investor still has to conduct ocular on the recommended sites where the basic requirement is accessibility to medical facilities.

The sites he said are areas with building for dormitory type or a raw site ideal for retirement villages.

The retirement village is an expansion of their existing business in Davao City of the Menogaia Corporation, a business process outsourcing business that caters to clients in Japan for designs and architecture and the English as Second Language where Davao Based instructors teach English on line to Japanese nationals.

Pasawa said they already have 100 workers for both the designs and architecture and the on-line language.

“Knowing the increasing cost of retirement facilities in Japan the investor had considered this investment as a big potential in Davao City,” he said.

Meanwhile the Korean investor is looking at developing an area in Buhangin for a mix-use of hotel, retirement part and for residential areas.

He said the Good Morning Company has a 10-hectare area located in between Robinsons and Panorama Subdivision.

The company he said already will start construction within the year although he did not give details about the project.

He said the two investors also did not specify whether they already made arrangements with the Philippine Retirement Authority but he stressed that it would be an advantage if these proposed retirement villages be enrolled at the PRA so they gets the promotion to attract more clients.

The trees have grown and the place looks like a well maintained man made forest with a beautiful landscape. They constructed a film center where Philippine Eagle documentaries can be viewed, its intention is to build awareness for the conservation of “Haring Ibon” (Philippine Eagle). Read More >>
