Lapu-Lapu City : Sunny side of Mactan

Mactan Island has risen over the years as a unique blend of beach gateways, tourist and recreation enclaves, light industries and suburban living.

The Island is comprised of Lapu-Lapu City and the municipality of Cordova. Formerly known as the swampy town of Opon, Lapu-Lapu City comprises most parts of Mactan and several islands.

It is connected to mainland Cebu by 2 bridges, known as the Mactan-Cebu-Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge which span the Cebu Strait.

The presence of the two bridges has greatly improved the accessibility between Lapu-Lapu City and other areas in Cebu by reducing transportation cost and travel time.

The city of Lapu-Lapu was formerly the swampy town of Opon until June 17, 1961 when R.A. No. 3134, the charter of Lapu-Lapu was finally passed. The city got its name from Datu Lapu-Lapu who, on April 27, 1521 fought the invading Spanish conquistadores led by Ferdinand Magellan, and successfully repelled the assault on the shores of Mactan. An old shrine still stands as a testament to the battle. (more…)

Cebu City urged to draft holistic tourism program for Russian tourists

The Russian Federation’s honorary consul in Cebu has urged local stakeholders to participate in her agenda for a holistic tourism program for Cebu as more Russian tourists are expected to travel to tourist destinations like the Philippines.

Russian Federation Honorary Consul in Cebu Armi Garcia stressed the need for “cultural immersion; synergy between tourism and academe; and understanding the relationship between tourism, trade and investment.

”The liberalization of Russian travel is good news since it would mean a new wave of income potential. But it could also be bad news for tourism players whose hands are suddenly full and couldn’t deliver the demands of an unfamiliar market,” said Garcia during the 5th Cebu Business Month Tourism Congress.

The Department of Tourism reported 128-percent increase of Russian tourist arrivals to Cebu in 2007.

”Russians spend more, about USD100 per day, and stay longer, from a minimum of nine days to a maximum of 21 days. The average spending per Russian tourist would be more than USD2,000,” said Verna Buensuceso, head of the Department of Tourism-Tourism Planning and Promotion’s Team Europe. (more…)

Cebu to participate in Switzerland’s biggest consumer fair next year

cebu city to join international fairCebu tourism will get another boost after the Cebu Provincial Government accepted the invitation from Philippine organizers to participate in Switzerland’s biggest consumer fair next year.

The fair, which is known as MUBA or Mastermesse Basel, is a yearly event in Basel, Switzerland and will be held from Feb. 13 to 22, 2009. It showcases the culture, products and festivals of the chosen guest country for ten days with two weekends.

Since 2000, Swiss fair organizers had invited countries such as Brazil, Madagascar, Vietnam and Denmark and make them the feature countries for the event. Next year, it’s the Philippines turn to be featured, which means it will be the main presenter of the fair.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) decided “Tropical Islands Philippines” as the country’s theme for the event.

Joel Valdes, chairman of the Philippine-Swiss Business Council, said this will be a great opportunity to present Cebu because the theme fits Cebu province.

Philippine organizers will focus on sectors such as jewelry, fashion accessories, Christmas and holiday decors, wearable, gifts, toys, and house wares, furniture/furnishings and processed food. (more…)

Palawan and Cebu Resorts Land in ASEAN Inaugural List of Green Hotels

Two luxury resorts in the Philippines – the El Nido Resorts in Lagen and Miniloc islands, and the Shangri-La Island Resort Mactan – are among the 81 properties in the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) region to receive the Green Hotel recognition given by the ASEAN member countries at its recent forum in Bangkok, Thailand.

According Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, “The recognition earned by these hotels should serve to encourage other tourism facilities and establishments to think of the environmental impact of their daily activities and find ways to protect the immediate community to which they belong.”

The tourism chief added that undertaking ecologically-sound activities will further help hotels and resorts save thousands of dollars in operational costs monthly.

The ASEAN defines a “green hotel” as one that “is environmentally- friendly and adopts energy conservation measures.”
