Lapu-Lapu City tourism officials to promote Mactan Island as Cebu’s tourism hub

Lapu-Lapu City officials are mapping out plans to promote Mactan Island to the international community as Cebu’s tourism hub.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza and other city officials have met with executives of different hotels and resorts in the city to discuss the matter and to come up with a collective idea on how to promote Lapu-Lapu city to the international community as Cebu’s tourist hub.

Lapu-Lapu City hosts several word-class hotels and resorts, among them, the Shangrila’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa, Plantation Bay Resort and the Waterfront Mactan Airport Hotel.

It also hosts the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country’s busiest airport outside of Manila.

Radaza said among the concerns raised were the peace and order situation and traffic.

Radaza had said she would focus on these two problems during her first 100 days in office. (more…)

San Remigio Beach Club plans to establish a tourism academy

The San Remigio Beach Club is planning to establish a tourism academy for residents of the northern Cebu town of San Remegio.

“In towns like San Remigio, it is very difficult to gain a good education. I was born there. That is why I know how it feels to strive for a better life and push for a college degree. This is the reason we are conceptualizing this tourism academy,” said Antonio Ynoc, president of San Remigio Beach Club.

The academy will provide six months training on tourism-related work like housekeeping, bartending and food handling. The students will then have their internship in the beach club.

After training, they will be able to work in Cebu City while gaining a bachelor’s degree or earning a living for their families.

Ynoc was hailed by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) as the “Countryside Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2009. (more…)

Cebu Flowerpecker is species champion in United Kingdom bird fair

The country’s Cebu Flowerpecker recently received the Bird Life Species Champion award in the recently held British Birdwatching Fair 2009 in Oakham, Rutland, United Kingdom (UK).

Known as the ‘Woodstock of Birders,’ the British Birdwatching Fair is an exclusive event where all sectors in birdwatching and wildlife conservation from all over the world gather.

Presented by BirdLife International, the award was given to the Department of Tourism (DOT) which was also named as the Species Champion for the said endemic bird.

“This award seals our country’s status as a premier birdwatching site in the global birders’ community. More importantly, it will draw further support for biodiversity awareness and wildlife preservation from our local sectors,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

The Cebu Flowerpecker has been rediscovered by renowned birder and zoologist Dr. Rob Timmins who saw it in 1992, 100 years after its last sighting. The bird was found in the village of Tabunan, and small numbers can also be seen in Nug-As and Mount Lantoy, also in Cebu. Presently, an estimated 100 birds of this specie may be living in the area. Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism further attributed the increase in arrivals to three travel considerations of the Chinese market which include cost, Chinese-friendly culture and quick and affordable facilitation of visa processing. “We are strong on all three factors. We have value-for-money destination packages, pervasive Chinese influences, and visa-upon-arrival for tourists,” Durano stressed.

Nine direct chartered flights from Shanghai to Cebu also served to accommodate the huge inbound traffic of Chinese arrivals. (more…)
