Kalibo plans for Ati-Atihan Festival 2010

The Kalibo Ati-Atihan Management Board (KAMB), inspired by the outcome of this year’s festival, envisions to have a grander, more successful event next year.

During a press conference here Monday, Mayor Raymar Rebaldo said they are planning to maximize the local tri-media and tap other resources to promote the festival in honor of its patron saint Sto. Nino.

The recently concluded Ati-atihan festival held last week saw thousands of revelers attending it that even the festival organizers were surprised to note that the Sunday procession which usually lasts for four hours only has extended to seven hours.

“The recent Ati-atihan is also successful because of the peace and order. There is no casualty during the revelry,” said Rebaldo.

New International Flights from Taiwan, China to boost tourism in Boracay

More tourists are expected to visit Boracay this year as the Kalibo Airport opens its doors to more international flights and tourists from Taiwan and mainland China.

The Kalibo Airport in Aklan province is one of the gateways to Boracay, the country’s top beach destination.

Taipei-based Mandarin Airlines has launched its first direct flight to Kalibo Saturday to give Taiwanese tourists easier access to Boracay, which is an ideal vacation spot for Taiwanese because of its proximity.

“With fuel prices soaring these days, the air ticket prices are higher to Japan, Korea, North America, and Europe. Southeast Asia is thus a very good choice for passengers who want a very reasonable price,” said Mandarin Airlines’ Richard Ma. (more…)

Boracay Island Paradise to be declared National Park

boracay island paradiseBoracay will soon be declared a national park.

This, as President Gloria Macapagal—Arroyo is set to implement an unrepealed Martial Law Proclamation making Boracay a national park and placing its resources under the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA)’s control and administration.

The move will be made as the Chief Executive wants to protect and preserve Boracay’s tourism value which spreads throughout Aklan, while guaranteeing sustainability of the island’s resources and livelihood.

It would be recalled that the Arroyo administration is resolved in investing in vital infrastructures which also includes means to take care of the environment as a reflection of the government’s commitment to better the Filipino people’s quality of life.

In a related development, P200 million worth double lane new Ibajay bridge will be inaugurated to replace the existing Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder (RCDG) bridge, leading to the Caticlan Jetty port that serves as a jump-off point to Boracay island. (more…)

Kalibo Ati-atihan continues to draw local and foreign tourists

ati-atihan festival kalibo aklan
Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director Edwin Trompeta said the celebration of the Kalibo Ati-atihan as in the past continues to draw local and foreign tourists.

In fact, Trompeta said that people could barely now get a reservation from hotels, pension houses or inns in the capital town of Aklan, where the street-merrymaking would happen on January 19-20, the highlight of the Ati-atihan Festival.

He said that this is so because of the uniqueness of the Ati-atihan Festival from other festivals in the country. The Ati-atihan Festival is a devotional event. It is a pilgrimage in honor of Sr. Sto. Nino, the tourism director said.

The Ati-atihan tribes’ performance is spontaneous unlike the Dinagyang which is choreographed and a pageantry.

He said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has helped promote the Ati-atihan of Kalibo when she went there to attend the mass and join in the revelry.

Because of the promotion of the Ati-atihan, the tourism director said he expects the crowd to swell during the festival’s highlight. Of course, politicians would be coming to grace the event, Trompeta said.

The director, however, appealed to the hotels, pension houses and inns not to take advantage of the influx of people because their skyrocketing prices may discourage tourists to come and affect the success of the event.
