Luxury resort to rise in whale shark town in Sorsogon

A tourist-oriented realty firm based here is developing a beachfront property in Donsol, Sorsogon where a world-class resort hotel would rise to boost the tourism industry in the area known as the “Whale Shark Capital of the World”.

Misibis Lands Inc. (MLI), the would be developer is now arranging the acquisition of the property and financing for the project that would cost some P500 million to be sourced largely from internal capitalization and bank loans, its chairman of the board and chief executive officer Elizalde Co said Thursday.

MLI, a prominent property developer that is among the Sunwest Group of Companies (SGC) based here and owned by the Co family is also owner of Hotel Venezia, a luxurious boutique hotel that lies within Renaissance Garden, a posh residential property at the heart of this city. (more…)

Palawan's Tubbataha Reef

Marine tourism lovers as well as the seasoned local and foreign travelers continue to swarm the jewel of Palawan, that is, the Tubbataha Reef.

Derived from two Samal words meaning “long reef” exposed at a low tide, Tubbataha is the largest coral reef and first natural World Heritage Site of the country.

Tubbataha Reef has been included in the search of the “7 Wonders of Nature in the World.” In fact, Tubbataha garnered one of the slots.

It covers some 33,200-hectare community of diverse corals, fishes and other forms of aquatic life. It is a dream destination for divers and marine scientists. It is home to more than 300 coral species, at least eight species of marine mammals, 380 species of fish, seven species of sea grass and 71 species of marine algae. (more…)

They arrive in droves at Puerto Princesa, and proceed almost immediately to points of destination in Coron, Busuanga, El Nido, Sabang, Taytay, Roxas, and other equally magnificent tourist and dive spots tucked away in the more than 1,700 islands of Palawan.

Davao listed in Department of Tourism’s priority Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism program

Davao is already in the priority for the Greet (Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism) program of the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the details are being finalized but this would come after the three pilot areas are completed.Â The Davao area will have four sites and two of these are in Davao City said DOT XI regional director Sonia Garcia.

Durano explained that under Greet program the focus also will be the participation of the community.Â He cited that in Donsol, Sorsogon the community had champion the “Greet” through their whale shark watching. The other areas are in Bohol where the chocolate hills are located and in Siargo in the Caraga Region. (more…)

suvivor france caramoan peninsula International adventure film producers of reality game show consider the Philippines as a good site after the 8th edition of “Survivor France” was successfully filmed in Caramoan, Camarines Sur.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano told Davao reporters that the successful filming of Survivor France led other international producers to consider the islands in the Philippines as the right site for adventure.

Durano graced the Ecotourism Congress in Davao City on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 where tourism industry players, property owners, tourism officers and planners talked on the new standards as guide for developing ecotourism destinations.

Several tourists would go for physical activity and not just sightseeing and Davao with authentic destinations has the ingredient for adventure travel, he said.

Durano said they had been pushing for that to include diving and scuba diving is another market segment. (more…)

For every moment of these trips spent arguing with a bovine check-in clerk at an airport, or sitting on a loo in a fly-blown hotel as the latest local delicacy thunders exuberantly out of your system, there is an ultimate reward.

As a firm believer in karma, and having braved the three-hour trip up the coast of Cebu in the Philippines with a driver who must have held equally strong views about reincarnation, it seemed apt that the island looming on the horizon was classically beautiful.

Unusually for one of our filming projects, we would be spending our entire Philippines trip on the tiny island of Malapascua, measuring about 2km by 1km. Our huts on the beach were perhaps the ultimate in romantic hideaways, the perfect place then for me to share with a big hairy cameraman.

We had been assured that our dive operator was just 10 minutes’ walk away. This ignored the warren of tracks and paths through the tiny fishing villages that dotted the island. My first trip, begun in the glow of a tropical dusk and ending in pitch darkness an hour later, was made possible only by two tiny children. (more…)
