Travel for a cause

Travel brings people from different worlds together. It is among the best ways to spread friendship and promote peace amongst diverse cultures and backgrounds.

People travel for various aims, too. Among the top motivations are relaxation and recreation.

However, there are those who travel beyond these reasons. There are those who journey with a mission; those who seek to move out of their comfort zones to make a difference. A cut above the rest, these people travel for a cause.

Up with People (UWP) is one such organization. A global education program aiming to spark people to action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries and the world, it has gained the Department of Tourism (DOT)’s support.

The Philippines is among the countries to be visited by the delegates to experience our rich culture and lend a hand doing community work.

The program consisted of extensive cultural immersion and community service to three continents in six months.

DOT proudly upholds the qualities of leadership training, service learning, and the performing arts, all of which are the major components of UWP.

“Travel should not only be for the sights. One should think of the service that one can give, and the connection a person can make with the people. The Philippines is a country where merely being with the people is already a pleasant adventure in itself,” said Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano.

On the other hand, Eduardo Jarque Jr., Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions, said “Aside from experiencing the rich culture of the Philippine highlands, it is also important that tourists see the potential for a meaningful interaction and community service,” added Jarque.

UWP participants have already visited 3,600 communities in 64 countries, have stayed in more than 500,000 host families, and have provided more than three million hours of community service.

In over four decades, UWP had made an impact to more than 20 million people around the world.

With unwavering assistance from DOT and other sponsors and donors, UWP expects a fruitful trip here in the Philippines.

The delegates are expected to arrive on November 19. The first part of their stay will be in Manila until December 4, followed by a visit to Subic Bay until December 16.

Subic Bay, a highlight for eco-tours in the country, takes pride in its unspoiled jungles and beaches that attract tourists yearning for extreme adventure.

According to Jarque, “the youth will surely appreciate their tour around Subic. We have the forests, the bay, and amenities that promote adventure, wellness, and leisure.”

Last year, UWP’s 68 international volunteers have visited the country to conduct a series of immersion and community service programs in its target communities.

UWP has worked with various socio-civic organizations and hosted activities that boasted of a lasting impact to residents, beneficiaries, and partners.

“We believe their visit here will be a highlight since the Philippines is a country with breathtaking sights, a welcoming climate, and a unique people and culture,” Jarque added.

Luis Petzhold, UWP community relations coordinator and tour manager for Asia, reiterated the organization’s strong stance for travel as a way to bridge differences and to make a lasting impact on the global community.

“Our trip to the Philippines last year was indeed very successful and meaningful, and the support of the DOT was very important to achieve those results,” he said.

Like the previous year, the UWP Philippine leg of the trip will culminate in a performance showcasing the unique and colourful talents of the delegates from over 30 countries.

The UWP participants will also have a courtesy call on ranking DOT officials during their stay in the Philippines.
