President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker in the opening ceremonies of the 10th Busig-On Festival and the 208th foundation day of this municipality on Monday, September 1, at the Labo Sports Plaza, here.
According to town Mayor Winifredo B. Oco, the President will lead the ribbon cutting for the formal opening of the Labo Tourism Trade Fair and Exhibit Center located in-front of the Labo People’s Park. “This Center will showcase various local products and alternative livelihood of Laboeños.”
The chief executive will also visit Museo de Labo after which she will conduct a dialogue with representatives of various sectors: farmers, cooperative, business, academe and local leaders of the province of Camarines Norte.
According to Oco, the festival intends to enrich people’s awareness in the development of local culture, history, and arts.
He said it will boost tourism and increase job opportunities for Laboeños. “In return it will bring economic gains in consonance with the program of President Arroyo to fight poverty (”Labanan ang Kahirapan”).
Furthermore, exhibits of different icons of the Virgin Mary will be displayed at the lobby of the municipal hall to commemorate her birthday on September 8, which coincides with the foundation day of Labo in the 18th century.
Busig-on Festival was started September 1-8, 1999. Coined from a Malay dictionary, Busig-on originated from root words “Busig” which means water and “on” meaning plenty. Busig-on is directly associated with Busig-on River, the longest river system in Camarines Norte which literally generates plenty of water.
This festival is based on an epic entitled “Ang Epiko ni Busig-on” written by Dr. Carlos C. Galvez, incumbent Labo Municipal Information Officer and Civil Defense Deputized Coordinator.
