Survey on Philippine tourists underway
To further boost the country’s tourism industry, a monthly survey will be conducted by the Department of Tourism (DOT).
According to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), they have already granted a clearance for the conduct of the Visitor Sample Survey (VSS) of the DOT.
Said survey, which will be undertaken every month, aims to generate information on visitor characteristics and preferences to serve as input to tourism development planning and policy formulation.
Likewise, the activity seeks to derive parameter estimates for measuring foreign exchange earnings from tourist travel.
Accordingly, the results of the survey are expected to be available by May 2009, says the NSCB.
Acting NSCB Chief Estrella Domingo said that six hundred visitors who are about to depart from the Philippines from a total of 60 sample flights leaving the five major international airports in the country will be interviewed monthly.
Domingo said that the survey will generate information on the demographic profile of respondents which includes nationality, age, sex and occupation.
In addition, data on the travel characteristics/preferences/psychographic information of the respondents which cover purpose of visit, places visited, type of travel arrangement, and duration of trip will be taken, she said.
The total cost of the survey is P1.02 million, covering traveling expenses (P0.21 million), supplies (P0.10 million), and other maintenance and operating expenses (P0.71 million), Domingo revealed, pointing out that the survey cost per respondent amounts to P170.
