 Davao City  — With its theme of interweaving culture and tourism the Department of Tourism (DOT) has kicked off a series of activities geared for the Kadayawan Festivities on the second and third week of August.

During the press launching of Wow Mindanaw held last Monday (July 30) at the Matina Town Square. DOT outlined a series of activities ranging from the Mindanao Travel Tourism Expo, a dance showcase, fashion show and a forum with local government executives are among those lined-up for the festival.

The MTTE which is to be held on August 11 is expected to gather various tourism sectors in the private and the public sector. It will feature a Governor’s forum where the importance of integrating tourism and different aspects of indigenous culture are shared to the respective local government chief executives of the region.

DOT Regional director Sonia Garcia said that theme of the festivities celebrates the different facets of the culture of Mindanao from dances, fashion to its cuisine. She said the coming celebration is a holistic and a wonderful way of honoring the lumad of the land.

Other events in the Wow Mindanaw program include the Sayaw Mindanaw, an offshoot of the Mindanao Indigenous Dance Festival and will show the performance of the Dance festival’s 10 winners. Among those performing is a group of students from Locsin Dance School, which will celebrate 60 years of existence and is considered as one of the country’s oldest dance schools.

The dance event will be held in NCCC mall this August 15-17 and is a much-awaited event for dance choreographers and enthusiasts.

A fashion show called Moda Mindanao will also be held on August 17 in SM Davao and August 18 in Marco Polo. It will feature the creations of 15 fashion designers and their creations which range from bridal, avant-garde, casual and island attire. The designers will be utilizing indigenous materials in coming up with their masterpieces and will be modeled by Davao’s young beauty queens. (PIA XI)
