The Php150 million improvement and rehabilitation of the Francisco Reyes airport in Coron in now underway as promised by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her State-of-the-Nation Address last year.
His Excellency Korean Ambassador Jong-Ki Hong led the groundbreaking ceremony with Provincial Governor Joel T. Reyes, First District Congressman Antonio C. Alvarez, Air Transportation Office Assistant Secretary Nilo Jatico, and a representative of the Korea International Cooperation Agency. The Korean government is providing the PhP150 million funding for the project which is part of the foreign-assisted infrastructure program of the Department of Transportation and Communications.
The improvement and rehabilitation works include the extension and concreting of the 400 meters of the runway; construction of a new airport terminal building; and the expansion of the runway apron.
The completion of the project in 2008 will allow bigger aircrafts to land in the airport. This will support the booming tourism industry in Coron and the rest of the Calamianes Group of Islands. At present, the airport is accessible only to small aircrafts.
Phase II of the improvement project is expected to commence in 2008. Budgeted at PhP500 million, Phase II will fully modernized the airport and make it as a secondary international airport to Puerto Princesa International Airport.
