tour of palawan 2007PUERTO PRINCESA CITY,  June 15 –Defending champion Jerry Ramos tried to recover his setback in the previous three laps by topping the fourth lap in the on-going “Tour of Palawan 2007” in this island province.

Crowd-favorite Ramos of Narra Team put more endurance and familiarity on the rough roads 70-kilometer Brooke’s Point-Rio Tuba, Bataraza route.

Ramos and his teammate, second placer Jomar Obra showed their superiority in the rough in comparison to Manila cyclists who are more comfortable in the concrete roads.

The 19-year old Obra is the youngest among 33 cyclists participating in the nine-day competition.

Meanwhile, Elmo Ramos of Manila Dream Team settled in third place in the fourth lap.

Palawan’s Ramos is now the leader of the tournament which now on its third day. He previously won the Puerto Princesa-Narra and Narra-Sofronio Espanola routes.

Santy Barnachea, also of Manila Dream Team, followed
in second, while 2006 champion Ramos, who experienced two bike’s mechanical problems in first lap, settled in third place in the over-all standing.

Other Manila riders Renato Sambrano and John Ricafort are also currently trailing in the fourth and fifth posts, respectively.

Art Alleda of the Provincial Information Office, said the cyclists are now in barangay Rio Tuba, some 260 kilometers south from this city.

Alleda said the Tuba to Rizal (lap 5), Rizal to Quezon (lap 6), Quezon to Berong (lap 7), Berong to Napsan (lap 8), Napsan to Bacungan (lap 9) and Bacungan to Sabang(lap 10) are “exciting” because they are cross-country routes and rough roads.

He said local cyclists are expected to win in these routes because of their familiarity of the terrain.

Other routes in northern Palawan are Sabang to Langogan (lap 11), Langogan to Port Barton (lap 12), Port Barton to San Vicente (lap 13), San Vicente to Taytay (lap 14) Taytay to El Nido (lap 15), Taytay to El Nido (lap 16), El Nido to Abongan (lap 16), Abongan to Roxas (lap 17), Roxas to Concepcion (18) and Concepcion to Puerto Princesa (19 lap), are mostly concrete roads.
